Notes for the guidance of teachers
Introduction to straight line art
A good way of introducing young children to the principle of symmetry is straight line art. It will help them discover the shapes created by a sequence of lines as well as the spaces created between the lines.
The following exercises involving straight line art are produced by using coloured pencils on paper. It could also be converted into string art by using push pins or nails in a suitable backing board.

Straight line art exercise 1
This exercise will introduce straight line art using the simplest of tools and it does not require maths or measuring skills.
Straight line art exercise 2
This exercise will produce straight line art using a compass to divide a circle into segments.
